Here’s the Backstory…

My ex worked for the College Division of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich as the Reprint Manager. Rupert Murdoch attempted a “Hostile Takeover,” so HBJ bought back enough of its stock to avoid the buyout. That backfired as the stock tanked. HBJ sold to General Cinema (FTW?!), and they moved HBJ, Holt Reinhart Winston, and The Dryden Press to Fort Worth, TX.
The move was the easiest ever; our belongings were packed up, moved, and unloaded in the corresponding rooms, my 1961 Mercedes 190 was transported, and I was paid for a few months while I looked for work!
To meet people and make connections, I joined the Fort Worth Camera Club. I also got a part-time job at a B&W photo lab. I think it was Camp Bowie Photo.
Camera clubs back then were part of a national organization; there were two meetings a month, one was a presentation of some sort, and the second meeting was a photo competition. Submissions had to be titled; I had a hard time coming up with titles. One month, I submitted a photograph of my neighbor’s backyard. Not wanting the members to think I was that much of a clutter slob, I titled the image, “Not my Backyard.” The members got a kick out of the title, I won a ribbon, and the rest is history!
